August 15th: Raised on high

He has pulled down princes from their thrones and raised high the lowly.

Luke 1:52

Recently I watched the huge trees in my backyard bob and weave unwillingly to the mighty winds and amazingly when I glanced over at my little plants, I realized that they stood unmoved by the same winds that seemed as if they would take the roof with them. Those little plants reminded me of the ‘lowly’ referred to in verse 52 of today’s Gospel passage.
As I reflect, also coming to mind are the many persons who kept us afloat during the Covid-19 lockdown period. People whom we may not have considered ‘essential’, were our saving grace in this time of crisis! God has always had and continues to have a special mission for the lowly and that is why He chose Mary, to bring Christ into the world.
It is fitting that in our Catholic tradition, we honour her as we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption today. A ‘lowly’, humble, virgin was raised on high… may all generations call her blessed. Mary, Queen of heaven, pray for us.
