June 28th: Looking forward and looking back

The disciple’s journey begins with an answer that comes from deep within

Matthew 10: 37-42

It’s not who you are or where you are coming from; as Jesus reminds his disciples, what matters is where you are going and what is required to get there”. Today’s Gospel points to obstacles that stand in the way of discipleship, preventing us from attaining New Life: the security and comfort of home; our unwillingness to abandon our customary way of life; and greater still, the cross that awaits along the way.

Jesus asks them: ‘Are you willing to leave ALL and follow me?’ ‘The cross that awaits, will you bear it with me?’ More than a question, the disciple’s journey begins with an answer that comes from deep within, answer to a question that lies deeper still, in another life, where all true questions are born and where our deepest choices are made. Choose between looking back and looking forward! Between heaven and earth! Between the life we know and the promise of another! Between the cross of suffering and the crown of earthly rewards! And to those who choose the ‘cross´ He whispers softly, ‘the crown will be yours forever’.
