Two of our Scrabble Warriors of St Joseph’s Convent, St Joseph, Amanda Khan and Sorraya Singh represented Trinidad and Tobago in December at the world-renowned WESPA (World English-language Scrabble® Players Association) Youth Cup 2018.
This three-day, 24-game international Youth Competitive Scrabble championship was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates with 116 participants from countries including Australia, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.
The journey to Dubai was not an easy one for these youths. Although many businesses in the private sector support youth development, many do not recognise Scrabble as a sport or more specifically, a Mind Sport and support for international representation is very limited.
But thanks to our special community of family members, current and past pupils, staff, friends, businesses in the private sector including Phoenix Park, Caribbean Finance Company Ltd, Mobile Luxuries, Colours In Motion, Southern Pharmaceuticals, SM Jaleel & Company Ltd and National Petroleum Marketing, we received some much-needed assistance.
This is the third year that students of St Joseph’s Convent, St Joseph have qualified to participate in the WESPA Youth Cup and we intend to continue to do so as we develop our mental prowess in Competitive Scrabble with the goal of one day winning this championship and showing the world of what our youths in Trinidad and Tobago are capable. – Dr Anna-Maria Khan, Supervising Teacher (Game Social Club), St Joseph’s Convent, St Joseph.
