The archdiocese of Kingston was strengthened July 1 with the ordination of Deacon Maria Lucas Gunalan Joseph Elango to the priesthood. In addition, two seminarians— Mario Anthony Burton and Lawrence K Muvengi, having completed the ministries of lector and acolyte were elevated to the order of diaconate at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity. Archbishop Kenneth Richards was the main celebrant.
Fr Elango, who hails from Tamil Nadu, India first came to Jamaica as a missionary from 1993 to 1997 as a member of the Missionaries of the Poor. He returned to India in 1997 and worked in various capacities until his return to Jamaica in 2005 as parish secretary and music director of St Patrick’s Church in Waterhouse, Kingston.
Diocesan newspaper, Catholic Opinion reported that in 2008, having expressed his desire to become a priest of the archdiocese, Elango worked for a year as system administrator and accounts assistant at a wholesale bakery in Kingston. He was admitted to seminary formation in 2009.
Subsequently, he completed his philosophical studies at the Pontifical Seminary of St Thomas Aquinas, Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic from 2010 to 2013.
Fr Elango completed his theological studies at St Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, Boynton Beach, Florida in 2018 and graduated with a Master of Divinity. His motto is ‘In All Things Give Glory to God.’
