On Saturday, May 12, Archbishop Jason Gordon together with priests and deacons from the Central Vicariate welcomed the neophytes of the communities of Tortuga, Gran Couva, Chaguanas, Couva and Carapichaima for the annual Neophytes Mass. The venue was the Our Lady of Mt Carmel RC Church, Carapichaima.
As the procession entered the church, the neophytes, catechists, priests, deacons and Archbishop Gordon sang lustily to ‘In God’s House’. This was followed by a warm welcome and greetings done by the Vicar for the Central Vicariate, Fr Derek Anton to all present.
Archbishop Gordon, in his homily addressed those to be confirmed, reminding them of their journey and the call to live their lives in the Spirit of God. He spoke of their sponsors who said ‘yes’, the catechists who gave their time and talent to bring them to Christ, and encouraged the candidates to pray constantly to hear the call of God to whichever vocation He may be leading them.
The archbishop also told them as they receive their confirmation to allow the Spirit to stir up within themselves the zeal to serve in their parishes and build the community of God wherever they are.
After his homily and the singing of the National Anthem, candidates from each parish were presented one at a time for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Archbishop Gordon laid his hands and anointed each candidate with sacred oil. It was indeed a holy moment for these candidates, some of whom were moved to tears.
After the Sacrament of Confirmation, the Mass continued with both the newly confirmed and received participating in the Prayer of the Faithful and Presentation of the Gifts.
The neophytes and those received into the Catholic faith at Easter were invited by Archbishop Gordon to stand as he welcomed them as new members, inspiring them to also find their treasure and talent as they begin to work in the vineyard of the Lord.
He extended a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all the catechists, sponsors and new members for making this journey in their life. A special presentation was made on behalf of the new members. As the celebration ended, the archbishop made himself available for photos. All were invited to the nearby parish hall for refreshments. – Rosemarie Siewnarine, Carapichaima RC
