1 Chronicles 16:34 states, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” These were the words and sentiments that were echoed and shared for Sumintra Sinanan who celebrated her 75th birthday on Saturday, January 27 at the Holy Name of Mary Chapel, Navet Village, Rio Claro.
After a Eucharistic service at the chapel, Lay Minister Jenny George-Nandoo and members of the congregation assembled at Sumintra’s home for a thanksgiving together with her family and other members of the community. The choir led by John Mahabir sang lustily as all present participated.
In these times, turning 75 is truly a blessing. Sumintra’s life has been a blessing to her family and the community. Together with her daughter Molly, she religiously cleans, sweeps, prepares the altar and organises flowers for Mass and services.
Her story has been one of great faith and determination. At the age of 40, her husband passed away and left her to care for her five daughters. She said it was difficult since the youngest was 10 and Sumintra possessed bare means of income other than the dasheen field which provided all the needs for her girls and herself.
She worked extremely hard in the fields to educate her daughters and took as her spouse Christ. She pointed her five daughters in the direction of God and the life of the Church, where they all served. Archbishop Anthony Pantin (deceased) played an instrumental role in encouraging and supporting Sumintra on her journey, leaving Port of Spain and coming to visit the family in Navet.
She is known in the community for her talents in art, craft, sewing, decorating and even counselling individuals, giving them hope and support. She believes highly in the power of intercession and has her own personal altar where she brings the world to God.
She celebrated not just a diamond jubilee but her journey of faith. Being Catholic for her is a joy; to all she meets, regardless of religion or race, her motto is: “All are welcome”. She has made a difference in her community and devoted her entire life to God and His will in her life.
Happy birthday, and thank you ‘Miss Sinanan’ for your witness. May God continue to shower His blessings in your life as you continue to love and serve Him each day.
